The term is used to describe:
1. Continuous backgammon competition, in which players are ranked by their level of skill. A competitor may play against players in a certain range of rating above his. If the player beats a stronger rival, then he climbs up the ladder, as opposed to his opponent, who moves down.
2. A rating chart.
